At parties or family gatherings, where does everyone gravitate? The host might have spent hours cleaning and rearranging the living room to accommodate everyone, but it’s only a matter of time before guests are crowded into the kitchen.

Let’s face it: We’re a nation of kitchen lovers. More than just a place to cook and prepare meals, the kitchen has become the focal point of the home. It’s where homeowners can creatively express themselves and experiment with materials, layouts and bold design.

Kitchens have changed a lot in the past decade. And they will continue to change. For a look at what 2018 has in store, here are five of the hottest kitchen design trends to keep your eyes on.

  1. Black accents and fixtures. People have been growing tired of whites, creams and neutral shades. The same goes for flashy silver accents and gold tones. A bold, strong statement that has been turning a lot of heads involves using black as the dominant color. As a color, black is both classic and unique, and since it works with just about every design style, everyone can embrace this new trend
  2. Concrete countertops. While marble may still be the gold standard for kitchen counters, it certainly isn’t the only game in town. Now, a couple of years ago few would have thought concrete counters would ever become a hot item in a contemporary kitchen. But thanks to the farmhouse design craze, concrete counters have emerged as a way to give your home the authentic, rustic look that so many homeowners want today.
  3. Flat-panel cabinets. The small, subtle design that goes into a cabinet can make a huge impact, as well as bring up a lot of divisive opinions. According to some industry reports, the clean, minimalist look of flat-panel cabinet doors has been growing in popularity in recent years.
  4. Free of bacteria. No matter how clean you keep your kitchen, the very fact that you prepare food in this room makes it a breeding place for bacteria like salmonella. To combat the spread of bacteria, many people have gotten rid of their wooden utensils, cutting boards and countertops, all of which can be a safe haven for germs. Now, there’s a more proactive way to protect against bacteria. The Italian firm Porcelanosa Krion has developed a solid surface material that has antimicrobial properties, which can both break up pollutants and kill bacteria.
  5. Disappearing vents. Some want a big, metallic vent hood over their stove while others prefer a more minimalist approach or to blend the vent hood to make it less obvious. As disappearing vents catch on and become more widely adopted, those big over-the-stove hoods might become a relic of the past.

Even if you love your kitchen, there comes a time when you want to try something new. Keep an eye on the most recent trends and you’ll get the inspiration you need to reimagine your favorite room!
