We are celebrating Women’s History Month! We asked women across our organization to reflect on their careers, accomplishments, and what Women’s History month means to them. Throughout March, we’ll be highlighting their answers on our blog and social media channels.

Sonia Altamirano is a bi-national executive with over ten years of experience in the banking and financial services industry, both in the USA and Mexico. Her experience spans asset and liability management, interest rate risk, investment portfolio management, liquidity management, and forecasting and budgeting.

Sonia has been the Finance Manager with Amplify since 2018. With her team-building skills, proactive ambition, attention to detail, and passion for her work, Sonia is an integral part of Amplify. We asked her some questions surrounding her career, her experience at Amplify, and her thoughts on Women’s History Month. The following are her responses to these questions.

Why did you choose your profession?

I love numbers, I’ve always had! I chose my profession to follow my dad’s career (Public accounting) and I specialized in Finance, which is my passion!

What do you love most about what you do?

I love how much numbers can tell you and how the work I do can help management make important business decisions.

I started my career in Banking and I wanted to explore the Credit Union world, and I’ve been loving it!

Tell us about a professional success here at Amplify that you’re proud of.

I’m proud to provide executive management with a vast repertoire of financial reports that help them make decisions and I’m also excited to be the responsible of the budget process which has been more efficient and has helped many areas in expense management.

What do you think is the key for success in a role like yours?

You have to be very passionate about numbers and very detailed oriented, having a good communication with key managers is also super important.

Tell us about a woman you look up to and why.

I’m originally from Mexico and while working woman are now in the rise, there is still some stereotype that woman are to stay home and raise the kids. I’m a fan of Frida Kahlo (she was a Mexican painter) and I admire all her work and how inspiring her paintings are.

Do you have a mentor?

I’ll say my mom, she is my guide and my rock.

What do you wish you could tell your younger self?

Slow down and enjoy the moment, there are great things coming your way!

As long as you love what you do, you will always succeed.”

Any advice to young women who want to succeed in your field, industry, or just in general?

No matter what you do, always put your heart on it; as long as you love what you do, you will always succeed.

What is the best career advice you’ve ever received?

Sacrifice and hard work pay off.

How are you breaking barriers faced by women in your field?

I’m embracing working and living in the US where woman have more opportunities and are recognized for their efforts.

What does Women’s History Month mean to you?

I really love how women nowadays can be both mothers and successful workers. It’s great that we are acknowledged for all the things we do.
