What is Identity Theft?

Identity (ID) Theft is when a person uses someone else’s ID to profit for themselves. Often the ID thief will open new accounts in their victim’s name with no intention of ever paying on the accounts. In extreme cases, ID thieves will present a false ID when they have medical treatment or are arrested.
How do I protect myself?

Be aware of where your personal identifying information is at all times. Personal identifying information will be information such as your date of birth, social security number, driver’s license number, etc.
  • Keep your driver’s license/ID in your wallet and keep your wallet with you
  • Destroy all old driver’s licenses
  • Memorize your social security number; keep your SSN card in a safe deposit box
  • Store passports in a safe deposit box until you are ready for your trip

What do I do if I’m a victim?

If you discover that you are or could potentially become a victim of ID theft, it is best that you act quickly.
