With the construction of Amplify Credit Union’s new flagship branch at Esperanza Crossing and Burnet Road underway, it’s time to reflect upon the origin of this vibrant and growing organization. Although it’s been over 30 years since Amplify moved from the IBM campus and into the Brockton branch (soon to be relocated at Esperanza Crossing) and over a decade since the name Amplify Credit Union was adopted in place of the IBM Texas Employees Federal Credit Union, the impact of the IBM affiliation is still very much in effect and will continue to be for years to come.
Present at the creation
When IBM first opened its doors in Central Texas in 1967, Austin was nothing like the 11th largest city in the nation as we know it today. In those days, Austin was known as a seat of government and a college town. IBM was instrumental in adding that third important component to the city’s character as one of the country’s leading tech centers. Other companies followed IBM’s lead and moved to Austin. The climate that IBM was instrumental in creating five decades ago is instrumental in Amplify’s continued growth and prosperity.
A Legacy of Innovation
Our members have high-tech roots where innovation was crucial to success giving us a strong foundation that has made us who we are today. The Credit Union has been a testing ground for IBM’s advancements in automated teller machines, RS/6000, and other technology and continues to innovate in the financial services and community service fronts. With a membership that lives on the cutting edge of technology, there has never been much chance that the Credit Union would fall behind the times.
IBMers, Still in the Fold
IBM’s heritage lives on in the ranks of Amplify’s members as well. A large percentage of our members still come from IBM employees and former employees and their relatives. The selection of the Esperanza Crossing site for the new flagship branch was made in no small part because of its direct access to the IBM campus.
A Proud Heritage
Although it’s been over a decade since the membership rolls were opened to anyone who lives, works, worships or attends school in Travis, Williamson, Hays, Caldwell, and Bastrop Counties, the spirit of IBM continues to impact Amplify Credit Union in many positive ways. Without the vision and foresight of its IBM employee founders and caretakers, Amplify could not be what it is today, a growing and progressive entity dedicated to the financial well-being of its members.
