How to Avoid Affordable Healthcare Act Scams

Published December 10, 2013 | Updated January 10, 2014

The Affordable Healthcare Act has recently become law, and with it has come confusion and worse -- scammers. James Quiggle from the Coalition against Insurance Fraud said half the states in the country already have reports on scammed victims. The confusion centers on Americans unsure of how ‘Obamacare’ actually works, and scammers are eager to explain it to you.

Become Informed: Protect Yourself and Your Loved Ones

  • First of all, the government will not call you. It will not email you or send door-to-door people to help with sign up. If someone calls offering enrollment, hang up.
  • Secondly, if you already have insurance through your employer, Medicare or some other program, you do not have to sign up for anything new. If you don’t have any insurance and need to sign up for the plan, you have until March 31, 2014. If someone contacts you urging you to enroll before it’s too late, hang up.
  • Lastly, if you need the new healthcare plan, the only money you have to spend is on your monthly insurance bill. If someone wants to charge you a “one-time fee” to enroll, it’s a scam.

If you have any more questions, want to report suspicious activity, or just want more information on the Affordable Healthcare Act, visit healthcare.gov or call 1-800-318-2596.
